Welcome to StoicBlog!

A little background…

Hi and welcome to my blog. This is something completely new and foreign to me but I figured I would give it a go! First, who am I and why should you even bother with this? Honestly, I am not sure I have a great answer for you…

I am a man who is constantly looking to learn and grow and have found great value in learning about and attempting to apply philosophical principles in my life. Being a casual student and I am by no means a subject matter expert and have no formal education in this field. I am a son, brother, husband and father and am looking to try and be better version of myself each day. In my personal and professional life, through philosophy, I have found various tools and thought patterns that have translated into “soft skills”. These have have helped me navigate some stressful and what could be considered to some, overwhelming situations (this is relative…lol).

The discipline I’ve looked at most is Stoicism (thus the name!). Please note, I value my privacy, so I will try to remain anonymous during this endeavor. That being said, the topic is important enough for me to attempt this so I can share my thoughts with others and maybe introduce someone to the subject.

Why this blog?

Today, society has seemingly failed to produce (or at the very least give them the limelight…) “role models” for people. I was able to navigate this through reading science fiction and fantasy novels as a young man. Heroes and antiheroes providing me a code of ethics and chivalrous attributes to strive for to lead a noble life…

As I’ve grown, my studies and role models have shifted (though I still enjoy science fictions/fantasy immensely!). I read excerpts from Plato’s Republic in college, and found myself enjoying my school work. This gradually evolved and I found myself digging into Stoicism some and reading bits of Mediations (won’t lie, this can be a dry read…).

The messages from the past speak to me though. The philosopher’s lessons seem relevant now more than ever. These lessons which have helped me personally in navigating relationships, accepting the cycles of life, and processing events in the world. They have helped bring me peace and through my imperfect application of the teachings have made me a stronger and better version of myself.

I have only skimmed the surface and have a cursory understanding of many of the topics, but I am hoping to explore and learn more. And I would like you to join me! Let’s find various topics together and explore teachers and their lessons. If you’re new to philosophy or the study of Stoicism in particular, I would love to introduce you to it. If you’re a seasoned veteran, please take me under your wing and show me the way!

Please leave a comment, and let me know what you think. Let me know how I can improve my website, writing, share topics of interest with me, etc. I would love to hear from you!
