February 2024 Reflection

Hi Reader and welcome back!

It’s time for me to reflect back on February to see how I am doing with the goals I set for 2024. Let’s review and recalibrate.

Goal progress so far…

I’ll be following the same format of reiterating the original goals and discussing what I did to make them happen. First:

Dedicate more time to the pursuit of building this website. Ideally this will teach me more about philosophy (and website building…) expanding my knowledge and skillset.

I managed to continue working on this weekly (nights/weekends)! This is turning into a kind of online journal for me which is interesting. I am being more publicly vulnerable than I am used to but the anonymity is providing me with a buffer which is nice. I am taking my time with studying the different topics and am treating this as a long-term endeavor. A marathon in which I will continue to explore the different philosophical disciplines. The latest topic was Epistemology which I feel could be used to enhance our empathy. Checkout my post on Epistemology for more details.

NEXT!

Increase my capabilities by getting on a more regimented workout routine (I am pretty casual about it now). This should help enforce discipline through other aspects of my life and will hopefully serve as a decent example for my children.

In my last post (January 2024 Reflection), I had mentioned that I hurt my back but it wasn’t the end of the world… I ended up jinxing myself lol. Literally a few days later, I had finished a workout and was telling my wife “I think I overdid it” when I heard and felt a POP in my lower back as I was putting my underwear on. That had me on the floor almost immediately and on the couch for a few days… Went to the Doctor and there was nothing obviously wrong which is great! Got a gym membership where they have a lap pool and have been swimming/exercising for the past two weeks on and off. My back still fees a little tight and painful at times but not nearly as bad as before. Long story short, stretch. I had a friend tell me to stretch years ago and against Marcus Aurelius’ advice (see my book 1 overview), I ignored my friend… Only one to blame is myself!

And finally,

Rediscover fishing! Fishing will allow me to disconnect from technology, enjoy the outdoors, and enjoy a semi-meditative state where I can enjoy the simple act of throwing out a line and reeling her back in.

I was blessed with a modest tax return and a badass wife who fully supports my desire to get back into fishing! I was able to get a reasonable freshwater fishing setup (targeting Bass) AND book a half day trip to try and get some Rockfish next month. Though I have not gone fishing yet, I am headed in the right direction.

Success

Not bad overall! Two successes and one opportunity which is better than last month.

Next Month?

Here is what I plan on doing with my goals for the following month:

For my first goal I will continue to dedicate some time each week to work on this website. I did better digging into Epistemology and I have been reading Mediations. I will try to continue my momentum here.

For my second goal, I have been swimming and exercising for the past two weeks. I will continue this trend into the following weeks which will make this a success so long as I am consistent! Don’t want to overdue it again though…

And fishing…. I got some gear and have one trip booked! I fully intend to take my freshwater setup out soon and may post a picture of some caught fish next month!

Thank you for your time! My messaging to you will remain consistent. I hope you are making progress towards your goals for this year. If not, I encourage you to pause and reflect on things. Identify what you did well and what could use some attention. Until next time!

Our present and future need not be defined by our past. However, the past should help inform our decisions.

Please leave a comment, and let me know what you think. Let me know how I can improve my website, writing, share topics of interest with me, etc. I would love to hear from you!
