Hi Reader,
One of my personal goals for this year is to finally read Meditations by Marcus Auerlius.
Why Meditations?
Years ago, I stumbled upon mediations when looking through the reading list of General James Mattis. Instantly, I was intrigued as this book has clearly stood the test of time. These types of books are a little outside of my wheelhouse though. I am a sucker for fiction. Between that life just happening, I struggled to find the time (or just didn’t make it…) to read the book. I would start, read 1 or 2 of the twelve books that makeup meditations, and then lose focus. BUT NO MORE! This is my personal foray into philosophy and more specifically Stoicism. I am more committed than I’ve been in the past (I am building a website for Pete’s sake…). So let’s get after it!
Getting Started…
I tend to be structured or methodical in my approach to things and this won’t be different (unless I get distracted which happens a lot to me…). To start, we need a book. In my spirit of committing, I have hard copy but to make it a little easier for myself. If others want to join, I found a free eBook of Mediations on the Project Gutenberg website. So grab copy of Mediations and let’s finish this together. With the book, here is the plan. There are 12 books in Meditations and I am believer in trying to understand what it is I am reading. Given this, the content, and how it’s presented, I am going to be taking this slow and will be aiming to complete one book each month. Upon completing a book, I intend to reflect on what it is I have read and how it applies in my life. Through these exercises and activities, I am hoping to understand, retain, and apply the information and lessons learned in my personal life!
DISCLAIMER: I am not a PhD and won’t pretend to be. I am not a philosopher or an educator. I am a student thus my pseudonym. In the spirit of honesty, I had to look up the words pseudonym and Mathetes. My ask of you is this, help me and others to learn. If I am missing a key piece of information or if something just flew over my head (which will happen!), please let me know.
Thank you for your time and patience and I look forward to discussing this historic read with you in more detail. Until next time!
Please leave a comment, and let me know what you think. Let me know how I can improve my website, writing, share topics of interest with me, etc. I would love to hear from you!
